«Roskomsvoboda» regularly conducts public campaigns aimed at protecting the rights and freedoms of the Internet community.

The purpose of our campaigns is to draw the attention of citizens, media and government institutions to problems that exist on the Runet and affect a large number of people or society as a whole. We believe that with the help of public outcry we can influence decisions made by officials and seek to repeal or mitigate laws that infringe on the rights of users.

Class action lawsuit against "Yandex.Food"
Class action lawsuit against "Yandex.Food"

On April 14, 2022, Roskomsvoboda and Network Freedoms filed a class action lawsuit against Yandex.Food LLC in the Zamoskvoretsky Court to hold the service liable for leaking personal data (PD) of users (plaintiffs). The second defendant in the case was the parent company YANDEX LLC. We ask: 1) to declare illegal the actions of "Yandex.Food" and "Yandex", which did not take necessary and sufficient measures to ensure the confidentiality of the plaintiffs' personal data; 2) to oblige "Yandex.Food" and "Yandex" to report on the measures taken to ensure the safety of personal data after the leak; 3) to recover from the defendants compensation for moral damage in the amount of 100,000 rubles in favor of each of the plaintiffs.

Public campaign for a moratorium on the use of facial recognition systems. The authorities use them without public scrutiny, while they are dual-use technologies and there are high risks of abuse, unauthorized surveillance and control of citizens. Recognition errors and black market data leaks from such systems also occur on a regular basis.

The battle for Tor
The battle for Tor

The Roskomsvoboda team, representing the interests of The Tor Project, Inc. and the entire Tor user community in Russia, has filed an appeal and will demand the annulment of the unjust judicial act that led to the blocking of the advanced technology for protecting online privacy.

The battle for Twitter
The battle for Twitter

A collective lawsuit from social network users to challenge Roskomnadzor's actions to slow down Twitter. We want to prove that slowing down traffic is a violation of the right to freely receive and disseminate information. In case national courts refuse to recognize the slowdown actions as illegal, we will file complaints with the ECHR and the UN in connection with the adoption of disproportionate measures to block an important social service using modern technologies of centralized online censorship.

The right to Bitcoin

The right to Bitcoin

Campaign against the blocking of crypto-sites and prosecution of enthusiasts for spreading information about bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies. We reached the Supreme Court and got the blocking overturned. In addition, the Supreme Court clarified for the first time that without notifying the site owner of the start of the process of recognizing the information as prohibited, the court decision is illegal. This made it possible to overturn dozens of decisions to block cryptocurrency-related websites.

#FreeBogatov

Defense of the administrator of the output node of the Tor network accused of calling for extremism and terrorism. Bogatov's defense, represented by RosComSvoboda's lawyers, presented the investigation with a lot of evidence of Bogatov's innocence. As a result of RosComSvoboda's lengthy informational and advocacy work, the criminal case was dropped and Bogatov was released.

Battle for Runet

Campaign against perpetual blocking of websites. We appealed the Moscow City Court's decision to permanently block torrent trackers RuTracker and Rutor on behalf of users of the affected resources, as well as musicians who freely distribute their music. RosComSvoboda's petition gathered 100,000 votes on ROI, becoming the second such petition on this platform. The Moscow City Court found that the decision did not concern the rights of the petitioner and denied the appeal.

Time to change the copyright

Time to change the copyright

Copyright reform in the digital age. We conducted an information campaign on the underlying problems in copyright law and drafted two bills on Soviet cultural heritage. Thanks to our advocacy, free licenses gained legal status and the norms of the law on collective copyright management were slightly changed. Also, as part of a separate campaign "Against the Internet Tax", we prevented the adoption of the Mikhalkov Law, which taxed the use of copyright objects on the Internet for personal use. We fought for the fate of Rutreker and Rutor, opposing the anti-piracy law, but in the end we guided both into the Russian digital underground.

Битва за Telegram

«Битва за Telegram» — кейс в нашей борьбе против блокировок ресурсов. В 2018 году мы подали коллективный иск на запрет российскими властями Telegram и даже дошли до ЕСПЧ. В апреле 2020 года Роскомнадзор снял с мессенджера блокировку, но борьба ещё не окончена. Наши юристы продолжают судебные разбирательства, чтоб призвать к ответу всех, кто два года затруднял работу сервиса.

On December 23, 2022, the Ministry of Justice included Roskomsvoboda in the register of unregistered public associations performing the functions of a foreign agent. We disagree with this decision and are appealing it in court.
